History

1933

Launched the “Katei Shoukuyo Kenkyukai,” a research group for home nutrition.

1935

Publication of the monthly nutritional journal Eiyo to Ryori (Nutrition and Cooking) begins.

1937

Research group name changed to “Eiyo to Ryori Gakuen” (Nutrition and Cooking School).

1940

Changed the school name to “Jyoshi Eiyo Gakuen” (Women’s Nutrition Institute).

1945

Founding member Shozo Kagawa passes away.

1948

The Kagawa Education Foundation is established. Dr. Aya develops a measuring cup and spoon for the first time in Japan.

1950

The Kagawa Nutrition Junior College is established.

1951

Foundation reorganized to the Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition.

1956

The Kagawa Nutrition Junior College opens the Evening Department of Health and Nutrition.

1959

The Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition opens the Kagawa College of Culinary and Confectionary Arts, the first licensed chef training college in Tokyo.

1961

Kagawa Nutrition University (hereafter referred to as “KNU”) is founded, made up of the School of Home Economics and the Department of Food and Nutrition. The Chef Training College and the Women’s Nutrition Institute are integrated into the Kagawa Nutrition School.

1964

KNU opens a correspondence course.

1965

The School of Home Economics, KNU, is reorganized and renamed the School of Nutrition Science.

1967

An Evening Department is created at KNU.

1969

The Graduate School of Nutrition Sciences, which offers a master’s degree program, is opened.

1972

Dr. Aya, founder of KNU, receives the Order of the Sacred Treasure award.

1976

The Kagawa Nutrition School is reorganized as Kagawa Vocational College.

1980

The Department of Health and Nutrition is founded in the Undergraduate School of Nutrition Sciences.

1989

A doctoral program is created for the Graduate School of Nutrition Sciences.

1990

The Institute of Nutrition Sciences at KNU is opened.

1991

Dr. Aya is honored as a Person of Cultural Merit.

1993

The Department of Culture and Nutrition opens.

1994

KNU is affiliated with three universities located in Western Australia.

1995

A master’s degree in health sciences is established at the graduate school.

1997

A doctorate in health sciences is established at the graduate school.

2000

Kagawa Nutrition Junior College is reorganized and renamed the Junior College of KNU.

2001

The Evening Department of the Junior College of KNU is abolished.

2003

The departments within the undergraduate school are reorganized and renamed the Department of Applied Nutrition, the Department of Health and Nutrition (comprising the Division of Nutrition Sciences and the Division of Health and School Nursing) and the Department of Culture and Nutrition.

2006

The Department of Culture and Nutrition is renamed the Department of Food Culture and Nutrition.

2010

Kagawa Vocational College is renamed the Kagawa College of Culinary and Confectionary Arts.

2013

The Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition celebrates its 80th anniversary.

2020

The Evening Department of Nutrition Sciences is closed.
