Akio Kagawa President
Japan Nutrition University Graduate School: Born out of immeasurable passion for nutritional sciences
The Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition was founded in 1933 with the aim of practicing and popularizing better dietary habits and pursuing research related to food and health, with an initial focus on the prevention and treatment of thiamine deficiency, or beriberi, which at the time was known as Japan’s national affliction.
1969 saw the opening of the long-awaited Master’s Course in Nutritional Sciences Degree Program mainly focusing on specialized research on nutritional science, followed in 1995 by the Master’s Course in Health Science Degree Program. Today, Doctoral courses are also offered in both these programs. As well as fostering advanced researchers, our Master’s curriculum cultivates highly professional expertise in line with societal needs, producing specialists in nutritional sciences, health science, and teaching. As well as training domestic talent, we are responding to international expectations for Japan’s nutritional sciences by promoting internationalization and proactively admitting international students into our programs.
Japan today is plagued by lifestyle diseases triggered by living habits such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, drinking, and stress. Tackling these diseases is an urgent priority, and our graduate school, with its specializations in food and health, is the subject of high expectations.
Guided by faculty members working at the forefront of research in Japan and internationally, our graduate school has developed a solid track record and produced numerous talented researchers, educators and professional leaders.
Our university provides an environment enabling the pursuit of high-level research activities, and we have two partner universities in Australia and one each in Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
